Moving to Portland in 2 weeks!!
Hello, everyone!

My husband and I are moving to Portland, OR in about 2 weeks. We snagged an apartment in a complex on SE Stark Street, about 8 or 9 miles east of downtown Portland. It is technically in Portland, but just before Rockwood and a few miles away from Gresham.

Is anyone familiar with SE Portland? If so, what can you tell me about that neighborhood? We heard that this area used to be pretty bad but has since improved.

And we are looking forward to moving to Portland! What are some must-see places to go and things to do? It looks like a really fun city! :)

Any and all help is greatly appreciated! We're both excited for our move but nervous because we'll be new in town!

Is anyone alive in here?

(reposted from my regular journal)

My husband and I came to a decision yesterday, and it seems as if we had both already decided before we spoke to each other.

We decided that when our big move comes next summer, I'll be heading to Portland first--about two weeks in advance--while he stays behind and ties up lose ends. I'll be heading out there by train and finding us an apartment while he loads up our small trailer of things and rides out with his father, if he can indeed take us.

We both kind of assumed this was what was going to happen, but we never talked about it until yesterday. I felt selfish and guilty when I suggested I should be the one to go first, while Evan stayed home and did the hard work. Evan still thinks that it would be safer for him to go in case something happened, but he agreed that I would be able to find us an apartment more efficiently than him.

I'll leave two weeks in advance of our 'moving day' to give me about four to six days to actually find an apartment that'll be ready, and the additional week will be in the event the unit needs to be prepared for tenants, and of course for my husband to get out to me.

We still don't have a set date, and that kind of worries me. When people ask me when we're moving and we say "next summer", it gives the impression that we aren't serious about this. We've never been more serious about anything in our lives. For the first time in a while, my husband and I have a solid, set goal; and we're not about to give up on it.

Anyone else out here have a similar experience in moving cross-country?

My husband and I are moving to Portland next summer, when our current lease is up in Saginaw, MI.

From the looks of this community, is there anyone in Portland who was born there? Ha-hah!

We honeymooned there last year after a while of interest, and fell in love. We can't wait to return. I hope to open a business there one day, if the market still supports the industry. (:

this might seem a little odd
I'm local to California, SF Bay Area specifically. A friend who moved to Portland from here, awhile ago, is finding herself quite lonely most of the time and I wanted to see what I could do to help her. However, me being here and her being there...I can only do so much.

That's where any of you reading this come in.

What is there to do in Portland?

Where are good places to make friends?

Say if you were presenting the city, and surrounding areas, to a friend to entice them to visit how would you best present the place to lure them in?

Granted, cuz I'll be xposting this to get a wide range of responses, if you currently live in Portland that would be ideal. Still, if you ever lived there that'd probably be okay too.

Thanks in advance!

Oh, on a random note, what exactly does "PDX" stand for?

Moving to the lovely city and looking for new friends!
I will be moving to Portland, Oregon January 20, 2009! I couldn't be anymore excited than to start my new year in such a beautiful city!!!
I am coming from Fort Worth, Texas and ready for the change.

Currently, I am a sophmore in college who will be attending Portland State by the summer, however I am in need of a place to live and people to meet. My boyfriend is living in SE Portland right now and when I get there I will stay with him until I find a roommate/decent living area. Does anyone need a roommate or willing to get to know me and some of my good Texas friends living in Portland already?

I don't party, I am very responsible, love reading and writing. I am a professional photographer and enjoy traveling all over the world. Very down to earth and extremely open minded.
Let me know if anyone is willing to meet up!!!

The Plan to move to Portland is in speaksies now
Hello Community -
My Boyfriend and I are planning a move from Florida (Tampa Bay Area) to Portland, OR. He plans on heading up before me (as I am the 'breadwinner' and need to keep the money going if you will) and also have to get my townhouse in order for renting before we move up there. We plan on being completely moved up there no later than the end of August 2009.

We are both looking forward to being in a community that is cycle friendly, earth conscious, beautiful everywhere you turn and has seasons change! We went up there for a vacation and to see some of his closest friends who have lived up there for a bit.
We're looking to live in the SE area of Portland, hoever can anyone else suggest other neighborhoods that are similar?
Also - I ballroom dance and found a TON of dance studios in the area. Does anyone have any preference? Maybe ones they go to, etc?

Also - if anyone else has any input, suggestions, etc., I will happily welcome them.
Thanks much!

x-posted around portland communities
my partner is looking to start school @ portland state, in about a year or so. if i wanted to live somewhat close to campus (no longer than a 15 minute drive; walking distance would be ideal), which areas, by name, would i look for when scouting for apartments?

also, any areas that you think i should not consider, and why?

already here!
I'm quite thankful I found this community. I just moved here about 6 months ago from St. Petersburg Florida. I sympathize with the stress of a new city and unfamiliar territory. Don't freak out, it is extremely affordable, and a wonderful city to be in- especially if you are found of good beer, culture, art, good food, and an active community. I have however found that in my particular work field (the service industry) that it is a bit difficult to find a job. But the economy is so fucked these days that's probably not unusual in a lot of cities! I am still a bit scarce for friends, so am interested in meeting people! Goodluck future portland comers!

hello... neighbor?
Hope this is appropriate...

My boyfriend and I are moving to Portland sometime after Thanksgiving 2007 (it keeps getting bumped back, raaarrrgh), and we'd just like to acquaint ourselves with local artists, as new friends, collaborators, or even just to tap a few folks with some practical questions. If you live in the area, we would love your advice on housing, getting around, frugal living, arts organizations, galleries open to submissions, etc.

I lived there briefly after college - anyone here remember Gracie's Birdcage, or The Compound warehouse studio/squatter's hive? - and am eager to move back, but I imagine it's changed... last I heard, Zoobomb is still careening through traffic once a month and Reading Frenzy is hanging on by a thread.

It's still under construction, but you can see some of my stuff on this website. Even though I went to school for photography, that experience pretty much sucked all the joy out of the medium, and now I do mixed media/collage stuff and paint. Right now I'm really into making dodgy wee beasties out of ceramics and polyclay, which has me thinking about getting a second degree in animation.

Looking forward to hearing from you....

Just what I was looking for!
I'm really excited to find a community for other people who are moving/have moved to Portland!  I'm waiting to hear back from my company for a possible job transfer to be with my boyfriend and can't wait to make the cross-country move.

I just joined the community and figured I'd say hi.  :D  I plan to read through all of the archived entries for more information about moves to Portland soon.  Thanks for having such a great community!

another "help me find *blank*" post
So my girlfriend and I are moving to Portland, from Oklahoma, in a couple of weeks and we're trying to find a clean, safe, and significantly cheap place to stay for a week or two while we're waiting for our stuff to be shipped to us and we look for a more permanent place to live. We've looked into a couple of places, but we're hoping to have a few more options and make a reservation pretty quick. Any help would be appreciated!

Hello
Hello all. I've decided to move to Portland about a year ago, some things happened to delay it but I am moving as soon as April is over. I have a roommate lined up so that's a lot of stress off of me. I just need to work on job hunting for the first time in over 7 years. So that's a little scary.

Not much to tell really.

I'm into photography and im hoping to find some people willing to be models for me. Plants are great but I'd love to work with something I can talk to who can understand and reply to me.

That's about it.

Links that helped us when we moved...
My husband and I have officially passed the 7 month mark of living here. We moved here from Ohio and have not regretted it once. I thought I'd pass along a few links that were very helpful for us. It took us awhile to find home, but we did....so if you're getting frustrated, we understand!
